The Dale County commission approved a 50-percent property tax abatement for up to 10 years and a 50-percent sales and use tax abatement for construction at Quality Fab on Powell Circle in Ariton.
Quality Fab Inc. co-owner Jerald Cook said the company intends to make about a $1 million investment into adding about 23,000 square feet of new construction and rehabilitating an existing 14,000 square feet of the facility to accommodate company growth.
He said the investment involves adding to the company’s equipment and infrastructure in order to increase overall capacity. The expansion is expected to be completed by 2018 and add 10 more jobs to the current employment of nearly 60 workers.
“We’ve been so busy that we can’t stop production, so this will be a project that likely won’t be complete until 2018,” he said.
“I’m not sure why production increased last year, but we were lucky – probably with the best year we’ve ever had. I’m just glad that being an existing company, we were able to get some help.”
Tax abatements are a common economic development tool to recruit new businesses to an area. Veronica Crock, executive director of the Ozark Dale County Economic Development Corporation, said the commission’s willingness to consider the abatement is evidence of economic efforts aimed at maintaining existing business.
“This shows that we are invested in the businesses in our community and are interested in keeping these businesses in Dale County,” Crock said.
“It’s important to us to work together in letting the businesses know that they have our support.”
Cook said Quality Fab works with engineers with corporations all over the world to build what they design. Quality Fab’s co-owner is Chuck Carter.
Crock said the abatement plan awaits approval by the Town of Ariton before it is fully in place. A special called meeting is set for next week.
